A customer browsing a used car on a marketplace listing site rarely enquires about just one vehicle. At 7:14pm on a Tuesday, she messages four dealers showing similar cars within the same six minutes, one of them yours. By 7:40pm, two have replied. By 8:15pm, she’s arranged a viewing with one of them. Your dealership’s reply, sent the following morning, arrives to a customer who’s already moved on and likely won’t say why.

The listing didn’t lose that lead. The response time did, and the loss happened faster than most dealerships’ internal process assumes.

Why marketplace leads behave differently to direct enquiries

A direct enquiry, someone who calls the dealership or fills in a form on the dealership’s own site, has usually already decided they want to talk to you specifically. A marketplace lead hasn’t made that decision yet. She’s comparing, and the comparison often happens within the hour, not over the following days. A lead that sits unanswered overnight has usually already been picked up by someone else by the time anyone replies, not because the other dealer had a better car, but because they replied while she was still deciding.

What a fast-response workflow actually needs

Three things have to happen in sequence, and if any one of them is slow, the others don’t matter: the enquiry needs to reach someone quickly, the first reply needs to happen within minutes rather than hours, and the follow-up needs to continue on a channel the customer will actually see, rather than an email that sits in an inbox behind three others.

WhatsApp fits the third part of that well. Messages sent through Cue see open rates above 90%, against roughly 40% for calls and 20% for email, which matters most in exactly this scenario: a lead that’s competing against three other dealers for the same customer’s attention in the same evening.

Where dealerships lose this without realising

The most common failure isn’t a slow reply. It’s a fast first reply followed by silence. An advisor sends a quick “thanks for your interest, someone will be in touch” within the hour, then genuinely intends to follow up properly the next day, by which point the customer has already decided based on whoever else replied with useful detail in the meantime. The first message buys time. It doesn’t win the lead on its own.

There’s a second, quieter version of the same problem: the reply arrives fast and with real detail, but on a channel the customer doesn’t check as often as they check WhatsApp. An email with the full spec sheet attached, sent within ten minutes, can still lose to a shorter WhatsApp message sent five minutes later, simply because one arrives somewhere the customer is already looking and the other sits in an inbox they’ll open that evening, if at all.

Where Cue fits today

Cue’s role in this is the response and follow-up workflow once a lead reaches your team: fast WhatsApp replies, booking a test drive or a call, and following up if the customer doesn’t respond straight away. Cue does not currently have a direct integration with AutoTrader, Motors, CarGurus or similar marketplace listing platforms; this article addresses the response workflow once a lead reaches your existing process, not automatic capture from these platforms. For the related workflow on the sales side once a customer is ready to visit, see book more test drives with WhatsApp and video.

Do marketplace leads convert at a lower rate than direct enquiries anyway, so is the effort worth it?

Does Cue pull leads directly from AutoTrader, Motors or CarGurus into WhatsApp automatically?

Is a fast first reply enough, or does the follow-up matter just as much?
