The right Zendesk alternative depends on one question: do you need a full service operating model, or a better way to answer customers? Zendesk Suite Team is £45 per agent a month on the UK site (annual billing, checked 26 October 2026). The full help-desk alternatives below price per agent too, between roughly $25 and $90 a seat. The messaging-led group prices on contacts or workspaces instead, which is where the comparison changes shape for teams whose customers mostly message them.

Most people arrive at this question for one of three reasons. The per-agent bill grows every time the team does. The AI pricing changed underneath them. Or messaging quietly became a main channel, and the help desk was never built for it.

What follows compares twelve Zendesk competitors on price, how they charge, which channels they cover natively, and who each one suits. It also covers when staying with Zendesk is the right call, because for a fair number of teams reading this, it will be.

Cue publishes this page and is on the list for one job: customer service that runs on messaging, with calls in the same inbox. If your operation is built around a self-service help centre and formal SLA management, Zendesk is the stronger platform, and this article says where.

How to read this comparison

The twelve split into two groups, because they are not competing for the same job.

Group A are full help-desk alternatives. If you need ticketing, a customer-facing knowledge base and formal service management, your shortlist is here.

Group B are lighter or messaging-led platforms. These suit teams where Zendesk is more help desk than the operation requires, where most customer contact arrives through messaging and the priority is answering it well rather than managing a case lifecycle.

Choosing between the groups matters more than choosing within them.

Prices are the vendors' published list prices on annual billing where offered. Zendesk is shown in GBP from zendesk.co.uk (26 October 2026); the others are in the currency their pricing page shows UK visitors, checked on the dates in each entry. All exclude VAT, WhatsApp and Meta messaging charges, telephony, onboarding and usage overages. The 20-agent column multiplies the list price by 20 and nothing else.

Group A: full help-desk alternatives

Six platforms that replace Zendesk like for like: ticketing, SLAs, a help centre and reporting, priced per agent, with Zendesk's own UK price as the benchmark.

1. Freshdesk Omni

Freshdesk Omni pricing, checked 13 October 2026

The most direct like-for-like comparison with Zendesk, and cheaper per seat. Growth is $29 per agent. It covers ticketing, a knowledge base, omnichannel channels including WhatsApp, and routing. Advanced routing and analytics need Pro at $79, which is where a lot of Zendesk-comparable functionality sits.

AI is priced by session rather than outcome: the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions are included, then $49 per 100. The inclusion period for the first 500 isn't stated clearly on the page, so don't assume it recurs monthly. Copilot is $29 per agent on eligible plans.

Choose it if you want the full help-desk model at a lower per-seat cost and you are willing to move a mature configuration.

2. Help Scout

Help Scout pricing, checked 13 October 2026

Simpler by design. Standard is $25 per user, with a usable free tier for five users, and the interface is built around conversations rather than case management. It includes a public knowledge base, and WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger are listed from Standard.

AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution after a three-month trial, with spend caps available. Be precise about what you are getting on ticketing: Help Scout has assignments, SLAs and workflows, but it is a conversation inbox rather than a Zendesk-equivalent ticket schema. For many teams that is the appeal.

Choose it if Zendesk's ticket model is more structure than you need and you still want a help centre.

3. Intercom

Intercom pricing, checked 13 October 2026

Strongest where support is chat-led, in-app or AI-forward. Essential is $29 per seat, the same base as Freshdesk, but the economics are different: Fin is $0.99 per outcome on top, and WhatsApp, Phone, SMS and email campaigns are pay as you go. Fin can also be bought for an existing help desk without Intercom seats.

Intercom's outcome definition is broader than classic support resolution. It includes procedure handoff and qualification, so model your volume before comparing it to a per-seat competitor. Worth knowing before you commit: exported conversation data cannot be imported into another Intercom workspace, and workflows, bots and macros often need manual recreation if you leave.

Choose it if your customers are in your product and chat is the primary channel.

4. Zoho Desk

Zoho Desk pricing, checked 1 September 2026

The budget option with surprising depth: ticketing, knowledge base from Standard, WhatsApp and social modules, and telephony integrations from Professional. There is a free tier and Zoho sells into the UK with GBP pricing available.

One caveat on the numbers. Zoho's pricing page offers a GBP selector, but published third-party figures for the UK tiers vary and we could not capture the official GBP values reliably. Check the price on Zoho's own site with GBP selected rather than trusting a comparison article, including this one.

Choose it if budget is the binding constraint and you can live with a more traditional interface.

5. HubSpot Service Hub

HubSpot pricing, GBP view, checked 2 November 2026

Rational for one specific reason: your CRM is already HubSpot. Service data sitting on the same customer record as marketing and sales is a real advantage that standalone help desks cannot replicate.

The Service Hub pricing page now redirects to HubSpot's platform pricing, which shows Starter £7, Professional £81 and Enterprise £155 per seat a month on annual billing in GBP (£9 and £90 on monthly billing). Professional is above Zendesk Suite Team, and onboarding is mandatory on Professional and Enterprise; the fee isn't shown on the live page, so ask for it in writing. AI runs on credits, with the Customer Agent charged per resolved conversation from those credits. WhatsApp needs Professional or above.

Choose it if you are on HubSpot. It is hard to justify otherwise.

6. Front

Front pricing, checked 13 October 2026

Blends collaborative inbox with formal ticketing better than most. Professional is $65 per seat and is the realistic tier for multi-channel work; Starter is $25 but caps at ten seats and one channel type. Autopilot starts at $0.05 per conversation, with Copilot at $20 per seat on the lower plans.

Two specifics matter. Native WhatsApp passes Meta's cost through plus a 20% admin fee, which is unusual and adds up. And Front offers a free Zendesk import tool, which is useful, though confirm exactly which objects, custom fields, attachments and automations it carries before treating migration as solved.

Choose it if your team collaborates heavily on customer email and you want ticketing without Zendesk's weight.

7. Gorgias

Gorgias pricing, checked 2 November 2026

Priced on tickets rather than seats, which is a real structural difference: $10 for 50 tickets up to $750 for 5,000, so a large team handling modest volume pays less than it would per head. Those are the helpdesk-only prices on annual billing; AI interactions are bundled by plan at a higher price, with overage at $1.50 per interaction.

It is unapologetically built for ecommerce, with order data from Shopify inside every ticket and revenue workflows built around it. Outside ecommerce that specialisation stops being an advantage.

Choose it if you are a Shopify or ecommerce brand. Look elsewhere if not.

Group B: when Zendesk is more help desk than you need

8. Cue

Diagram comparing per-agent pricing with Cue's unlimited seats

Best for teams whose customers message them. Cue brings WhatsApp, phone, email, Facebook Messenger and web chat into one inbox with tickets, routing, collision prevention and AI answers on digital channels, with unlimited seats on every plan. Strongest where messaging is the primary service channel rather than an add-on.

Calls sit in the same inbox as messages. Cue Phone is included on every plan: inbound calls are matched to the contact by phone number and recorded and transcribed on the contact record, and from the Automate plan Phone Flows route them through a keypad menu built in the same Flow builder as your messaging. Calls are answered by your team; Cue's AI Agents work on WhatsApp, email, web chat and Messenger.

Pricing is on monthly active contacts, from £249 a month at 1,500 contacts, £499 for the Automate plan that adds AI Agents and the chatbot builder. Onboarding is included from Automate up; the entry Connect plan carries a one-off £249 onboarding fee. Plans run on a 12-month contract. AI resolutions are published: £0.99 each in bundles of 100, 500 or 1,000, or £1.49 out of bundle, with 500 a month included on Automate and 1,000 on Scale at this contact tier. WhatsApp messages are £0.10 marketing, £0.05 utility, £0.05 authentication and £0.02 service. Cue is GDPR and POPIA compliant and a badged Meta Business Partner.

Because seats are unlimited, the comparison with Zendesk flips at a certain team size. Ten agents on Zendesk Suite Team are £450 a month in licences on the UK site; twenty are £900. Ten or twenty agents on Cue Connect at 1,500 monthly active contacts are £249, or £499 on Automate with AI Agents included. Below about six agents on Connect, or about eleven on Automate, Zendesk Suite Team is the cheaper licence. These are licence components only, at one contact tier, before usage on either side, so treat them as the shape of the comparison rather than a quote.

Two G2 reviews from September 2026 show the shape of it in use. A head of business development at A.P. Moller - Maersk describes bringing Facebook, email and WhatsApp into one Cue inbox, with automated messages and leads assigned to teams under management oversight. The founder of Motify likes the single view of who owns each query, and dislikes that a customer who arrives on two channels can end up as two contact records. That second point is fair: Cue links conversations to the contact's phone number and email address rather than merging channels into one thread, so matched contact details matter. Cue is rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2 from 27 reviews (19 October 2026).

Choose it if most customer contact arrives through messaging. Organisations that need a customer self-service portal should look at the full help-desk options above.

9. Crisp

Crisp pricing, checked 13 October 2026

Flat workspace pricing rather than per seat: $45 for Mini with four seats, $95 for Essentials with ten, $295 for Plus with twenty or more, and additional Plus agents at $10. Crisp lists WhatsApp and other external channels from Essentials and covers email, chat, SMS, Instagram and Messenger.

Two things to check. A full ticketing system is only included on Plus, and voice is not evidenced as native. AI credits are included by plan, $5, $25 and $75 respectively; they are credits, not a fixed number of resolutions.

Choose it if you want predictable flat pricing and broad messaging coverage in a smaller team.

10. Missive

Missive pricing, checked 13 October 2026

The clearest "shared inbox, not help desk" option, priced at $14 to $36 per user. Starter supports up to five users and Productive up to fifty, with Productive adding external integrations, rules and API access, and Business adding advanced analytics and SSO. It positions itself deliberately: conversations, assignments and tasks, with no customer-facing knowledge base.

WhatsApp is documented. Confirm the current plan mapping and Meta billing treatment in a quote rather than from a comparison page.

Choose it if collaborative email handling is the job and formal ticketing is not.

11. respond.io

respond.io pricing, checked 13 October 2026

Broad messaging orchestration across many channels, priced on monthly active contacts from $79 with users included by tier. Growth adds workflows and AI agents; Advanced adds HTTP requests and webhooks. respond.io advertises VoIP and WhatsApp Calling, and states that it adds no markup to Meta's WhatsApp charges.

It is not evidenced as a formal help-desk replacement and there is no native customer help centre, so treat it as a messaging operations platform rather than a Zendesk substitute. We compare it with Cue in respond.io vs Cue.

Choose it if you run many messaging channels and contact orchestration matters more than case management.

12. Wati

Wati pricing, checked 13 October 2026

A WhatsApp-first platform focused on sales, engagement and automation. Growth includes three users and one connected channel; Pro and Business include five users. Astra AI agents are separately priced.

Wati's pricing page shows prices by region and did not display a UK amount when we checked, so get a written quote before comparing it to anything. Our Wati alternatives guide covers it in more depth.

Choose it if WhatsApp-led sales and engagement is the primary job rather than service operations.

Cheaper alternatives to Zendesk, and what "cheaper" leaves out

A cheaper seat price is the easiest thing to find on this page and the least reliable guide to what you'll pay. Four things move the real number: how many people need a login (per-seat pricing punishes occasional users; contact or workspace pricing doesn't); what the AI unit is and what's included (outcomes, resolutions, sessions and credits are all different things); messaging and telephony usage, which every vendor bills separately; and onboarding, migration and the tools you keep running alongside. Price two options at your real headcount and volume for twelve months, including the one-offs, before calling either of them cheaper.

Zendesk alternatives for WhatsApp-first support

Four messaging-led platforms for WhatsApp-first support

Zendesk supports WhatsApp on its Suite plans, so a WhatsApp-first team doesn't have to leave. The question is whether the ticket model and the per-agent price fit a service operation where most contact is a message thread rather than a case. Four platforms on this list are built around messaging first.

When staying with Zendesk is the right decision

This section exists because the answer is often yes.

Zendesk is likely the better decision when you need several of these together: formal ticket objects with incident and problem relationships; multiple brands, regions, languages and agent tiers; integrated email, messaging, social, voice, help centre and community; advanced routing, workforce management, quality assurance, sandboxing and granular permissions; a large marketplace and access to experienced implementation partners.

Add continuity to that list. Years of configured workflows and historical data have real value, and migration risk can easily exceed the saving.

Per-seat pricing also has a real advantage that gets overlooked. If your headcount is stable and your contact volume fluctuates, per-seat gives finance a predictable number. Usage pricing can be better for large teams with low volume, and per-seat better for stable rosters. Neither model is inherently fairer.

Before you migrate, try simplifying. A team that finds Zendesk heavy should first test whether reducing views, triggers, queues and permissions fixes it. That is days of work against weeks of migration.

What Zendesk changed in 2026

Zendesk changed its UK prices and the way it charges for AI resolutions during 2026, and both affect any comparison you make.

Sources: Zendesk UK pricing, checked 26 October 2026; automated resolution tiers, resolution allowances and Relate 2026, checked 1 September 2026

Resolution tiers, introduced 18 May 2026. Zendesk now distinguishes three outcomes. An assisted escalation is where AI contributes but a human finishes. This does not consume your resolution allowance. A contained resolution is where AI handles the interaction but an independent language-model evaluation does not confirm it was satisfactorily resolved. This also does not consume allowance. A verified resolution is where that evaluation confirms the request was resolved, and this does.

It is a more thoughtful model than a blanket per-resolution charge. But Zendesk publishes no universal price per verified resolution, so you cannot compare it to a published unit rate. On the UK pricing page, Team plans include five automated resolutions per agent per month and Professional ten, with additional resolutions at £1.30 committed or US$2.00 pay as you go. The evaluator's accuracy, benchmark data and appeal process are not public, so treat "verified" as Zendesk's definition rather than an objective measure.

Reporting changed at the same time. Zendesk's automated resolution rate now includes both contained and verified resolutions in the numerator, while billing tracks verified only, and historical data has been remapped for up to two years. If you are comparing an automation rate across 2025 and 2026, reconcile the definitions first.

There is a broader point here. Vendors increasingly meter AI by outcomes, resolutions, sessions or credits while still selling the human platform per seat, and each defines its unit differently. Comparing unit prices across vendors compares different things. Model total monthly cost at your team size and your volume instead.

A switching checklist

Before committing:

  1. Model total cost at your actual headcount and your actual volume, on both platforms.

  2. Add Meta and carrier messaging charges. They are separate everywhere; Meta's rate card is public.

  3. Check onboarding and implementation fees. HubSpot's is mandatory; Cue's applies on the entry plan only.

  4. Confirm what your current platform lets you export. Zendesk exports are not enabled by default, the UI tools are not on Team plans, and AI agent tickets cannot currently be exported at all.

  5. Confirm what the destination can import, object by object, not from an overview page.

  6. Price the rebuild. Workflows, automations, macros and integrations are rebuilt on the new platform rather than migrated.

  7. Ask about contract term, auto-renewal notice, seat true-down rules, minimum AI commitments and overage caps.

  8. If WhatsApp matters, establish who owns the number and the WhatsApp Business Account.

Switching help desk is mostly a question of what your operating model needs. If it is built around messaging, that is the case for Cue, and this article has tried to say where it isn't. Book a demo and we'll be straight about fit, or read more about Cue for customer service teams. Every comparison we've published is collected at Cue compared with the alternatives, including the Trengo alternatives guide for teams leaning towards a shared inbox.

Zendesk alternatives in South Africa

The same twelve apply, with two differences. Only Cue and Zoho publish rand or regional pricing; the rest show USD. Cue's South African plans are R4,500 (Connect), R8,800 (Automate) and R13,300 (Scale) a month at 1,500 monthly active contacts, on the rand pricing page, with a Cape Town office and POPIA compliance.
